BENJAMIN ALARD . Clavecin, Orgue, Clavicorde

L’univers de Benjamin Alard est celui de la musique de Jean-Sébastien Bach et c’est pour cette connivence musicale que le jury du Concours international de clavecin de Bruges lui décerne son premier prix en 2004.

Très jeune attiré par les mystères de l’orgue, ses premiers professeurs sont Louis Thiry et François Ménissier aux conservatoires de Dieppe puis de Rouen. C’est grâce à Elisabeth Joyé, avec laquelle il étudie à Paris, qu’il découvre le répertoire pour clavecin. En 2003, il intègre la Schola Cantorum de Bâle pour travailler avec Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, Jean-Claude Zehnder et Andrea Marcon.

Titulaire de l’orgue Bernard Aubertin de l’église Saint-Louis-en l’Île à Paris depuis 2005, Benjamin Alard y donne régulièrement des récitals organisés autour de la musique de Bach.

Tant au clavecin qu’à l’orgue, il partage son temps entre les récitals et la musique de chambre (à deux clavecins avec Élisabeth Joyé, en sonate avec le flûtiste Emmanuel Pahud) et il est chaque saison l’invité des principaux centres de musique ancienne de par le monde, en Europe, au Japon ou aux Etats-Unis.

Benjamin Alard a enregistré chez Hortus le « Andreas Bach Buch », des transcriptions, le Manuscrit Bauyn et un disque de musique française des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, mais aussi les Sonates en trio pour orgue de JS Bach et le ClavierÜbung I et II, chez Alpha. Ces enregistrements ont été récompensés à de nombreuses reprises par la presse musicale.

Il a commencé à enregistrer en 2017, chez harmonia mundi, l’intégrale de l’œuvre pour claviers seuls de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Ce travail, d’une importance peu commune, se déroulera sur plus de dix ans et les huit premiers volumes, d’une série de 17, sont désormais disponibles.

C’est dans l’esprit du culte en associant un chœur d’amateurs, l’Ensemble vocal Bergamasque, et un chœur d’enfants, la Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, que Benjamin Alard a enregistré l’Orgelbüchlein publié à l’automne 2022. Mai 2023 a vu la sortie du volume 8 dédié à Maria Barbara, la première épouse de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Le volume 9 attendu pour le printemps 2024 sera consacré à « Köthen, les Années heureuses » mais avant cela, dans le courant de l’hiver 2024, sortira un disque Manuel de Falla auquel harmonia mundi a associé Benjamin Alard. Il y interprète le concerto pour clavecin et cinq instruments et joue la partie de clavecin dans El retablo de Maese Pedro avec le Mahler Chamber Orchestra dirigé par Pablo Heras-Casado.

BENJAMIN ALARD . Harpsichord, Organ, Clavichord

While still quite young he began studying music in his hometown in Dieppe, France. He was soon drawn to the organ and entered the Conservatory of Rouen where he studied with Louis Thiry and François Ménissier.

He was first introduced to the harpsichord by Elizabeth Joyé, with whom he studied in Paris before going on, in 2003, to the Schola Cantorum in Basel to work with Jörg-Andreas Bôtticher, Jean-Claude Zehnder and Andrea Marcon.

Since 2005 he has been organist of the Bernard Aubertin organ in the church of Saint-Louis-en-l’Ile in Paris where each season he gives concerts about the music of Bach.

Today Benjamin Alard divides his time between performing recitals and chamber music on both the harpsichord and organ. He often performs repertoire for two harpsichords with Elisabeth Joyé, in duo with the violinist Francois Fernandez or in trio but also with Emmanuel Pahud. He is regularly invited to perform as soloist in music series in Europe, Japan and North America.

Benjamin Alard has recorded for the label Hortus and has made several recordings of works by J. S. Bach for Alpha (Sonatas in trio, Clavier Übung I and II). His recordings have consistently received high praise from the press and have been awarded multiple prizes.

He now devotes himself to the complete works for harpsichord and organ solo of Johann Sebastian Bach for harmonia mundi. Eight boxes, of 17, are already available. Volume 3, “À la française”, was the recipient of the presitigous Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkrik (German Record Critics' Award). The release of volume 5, “Weimar 1708-1713 - Toccatas and Fuges” was followed in March of 2022 by the publication of volume 6, the first book of “The Well-Tempered Clavier”, marking the work’s 300th anniversary. This recording got the awards “Best J.S. Bach recording of 2022” (12/2022) & “Best Classical Music Album of 2022” (11/2022) by Gramophone and the famous “Diapason d’or-Arte” awarded by the French magazine Diapason. Benjamin Alard recorded the Orgelbüchlein (published in the autumn of 2022), in the spirit of the cult by associating an amateur choir, the Ensemble Vocal Bergamasque, and a children’s choir, La Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris.

May 2023: release of volume 8 dedicated to Maria Barbara, the first wife of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Volume 9 is expected for spring 2024 and will be devoted to “Köthen, the Happy Years”.

Before that, in winter 2024, a disc dedicated to Manuel de Falla will be released by harmonia mundi with Benjamin Alard performing the Concerto for Harpsichord and five instruments and playing the harpsichord part in El retablo de Maese Pedro with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado.
