J.S. Bach - Two unpublished chaconnes available today at harmonia mundi
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Bach-Archiv Leipzig, two recently authenticated keyboard works enrich the catalog of Johann Sebastian Bach: a Chaconne in D minor (BWV 1178) and a
Chaconne in G minor (BWV 1179).
Housed in Brussels at the Royal Library of Belgium, these pieces have been studied and authenticated by musicologist Peter Wollny.
They are believed to date back to the composer’s youth when he held his first position as an organist in the city of Arnstadt (1703-1707).
Harpsichordist Benjamin Alard, who is set to release a recording on March 6, perceives "a Bach in the making, marked by the influence of Pachelbel, Böhm, and Buxtehude." The D minor chaconne,
more theatrical, naturally flourishes on the harpsichord, while the G minor chaconne, more introspective, evokes the intimate atmosphere of the pedal clavichord.
These discoveries remind us that at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, dance forms, which became a field for musical experimentation, contributed to shaping the language of the young Bach,
long before he became the Cantor of Leipzig.
The recording of these two chaconnes will be included in volume 12 (the second book of The Well-Tempered Clavier) of the complete keyboard works of Bach that Benjamin Alard is recording for
harmonia mundi, set to be released at the end of 2026.

À l’occasion du 75ᵉ anniversaire du Bach-Archiv Leipzig, deux œuvres pour clavier récemment authentifiées, viennent enrichir le catalogue de Johann Sebastian Bach : une Chaconne en ré mineur (BWV
1178) et une Chaconne en sol mineur (BWV 1179).
Conservées à Bruxelles, à la Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, ces pièces ont été étudiées et authentifiées par le musicologue Peter Wollny. Elles dateraient des années de jeunesse du compositeur
alors qu’il occupait son premier poste d’organiste de la ville d’Arnstadt (1703-1707).
Le claveciniste Benjamin Alard, qui en signe une interprétation à paraître en digital le 6 mars, y perçoit « un Bach en devenir, marqué par l’influence de Pachelbel, Böhm et Buxtehude ». La
chaconne en ré mineur, plus théâtrale, s’épanouit naturellement au clavecin, tandis que celle en sol mineur, plus introspective, évoque le climat intime du clavicorde à pédalier.
Ces découvertes rappellent qu’à la charnière des XVIIᵉ et XVIIIᵉ siècles, les formes de danse, devenues terrain d’expérimentation musicale, ont contribué à forger le langage du jeune Bach, bien
avant le Cantor de Leipzig.
L’enregistrement de ces deux chaconnes sera inclus dans le volume 12 (deuxième Livre du Clavier bien tempéré) de l’intégrale pour clavier de Bach que Benjamin Alard enregistre pour harmonia
mundi, à paraître fin 2026.

After a stopover in Cöthen, Benjamin Alard continues his musical journey through the works of J.S. Bach, , which he performs on harpsichord and clavichords. Here he focuses on the composer’s early years in Leipzig, with the six Trio Sonatas. The famous Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach immerses us in the more intimate world of the cantor's house.
Après le séjour à Coethen, Benjamin Alard poursuit son voyage musical à travers l’œuvre de J.S. Bach, qu’il interprète au clavecin et clavicordes. Il s’intéresse ici aux débuts du musicien à Leipzig, avec ses six Sonates en trio et avec le célèbre Petit Livre d’Anna Magdalena, il nous fait entrer dans l’univers plus intime et domestique du Cantor.
Nach dem Aufenthalt in Köthen geht die musikalische Reise von Benjamin Alard durch J. S. Bachs Werk weiter. Nun interessiert ihn die Anfangszeit des Komponisten in Leipzig, wo die sechs Triosonaten entstanden, die Alard auf dem Cembalo und verschiedenen Clavichorden interpretiert. Mit dem berühmten Notenbüchle in für Anna Magdalena lässt er uns in den ganz persönlichen, häuslichen Bereich des Kantors eintreten.
